Katarina Witt began to ice skate at the age 5 years. Then, her talent became apparent and she was accepted to Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. This is where she met the coach Jutta M ller. Witt was able to make her mark in 1982, when she placed second in the World Championships at Copenhagen. The elegance and grace of Witt caught the eye of all and she has dominated her sport ever since. Olympic triumph Katarina (now Witt) won the Women's Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. Then, four years after the event, she was able to take home an even intense race. The free skater lost however she was awarded the gold medal for the figures that were compulsory and the short program. Witt is the only female figure skater to win the same competition twice, after Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her accomplishments in the film industry as an actress. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. The crowd was captivated by her performance despite the fact that she placed seventh. The year 1995 was the year that Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
