An animal adult, whether human or non-human, is one that has grown in all its potential. Within the human realm, adults refer to social and legal concepts. Legally mature means that a person is at the point of adulthood and is defined as independent, self sufficient, and responsible. They are also known as "majors", they can also be said to have reached the age of adulthood. It is generally accepted that the minimum age that a person can legally become an adult is 18. However, this can be different based on rights under the law and country as well as psychological development.

The stage of development for humans that is when physical and mental maturity has been achieved. Adulthood is commonly considered to begin at age 20 or 21. Old age is about 60 years after middle the age of 60. The three phases of adulthood are the early years (from mid-30s through late-60s) mid-adulthood between the mid-30s through late-60s, and finally adulthood, (mid-60s through death). By the time we reach the age of early adulthood (20 to the early 40s) our physical growth is complete, although the size and weight of our bodies might increase slightly. When we are young the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their highest such as muscle strength, reaction time, sensory abilities, and cardiac functioning.
